What’s the Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is a year-round travel destination, but two distinct monsoon seasons shape which part of Sri Lanka you’ll want to go and when.

Region Best Months Weather & Highlights
West & South Coasts (Colombo,Galle, Mirissa) December – April Sunny days, calm seas, perfect for beach holidays
Hill Country (Kandy, Ella,Nuwara Eliya) December – April Cool and misty, ideal for train journeys and tea country walks
East Coast (Trincomalee,Arugam Bay) May – September Dry season, great for surfing and whale watching
Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya,Dambulla, Anuradhapura) Year-round Generally warm with occasional showers
Insider tip:
If you want to avoid crowds but still enjoy great weather, travel in May–June or September–October, for a quieter, greener experience, full of local flavour.

Now that we’ve sorted the weather, what should you go and see? Fear not we’ve made a list of our favourite attractions!

Our list of must-see attractions:
  1. Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Rising dramatically from the central plains, Sigiriya is Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmark. Climb the ancient rock citadel, admire frescoes painted over 1,500 years ago, and gaze across miles of forest and farmland
  2. Ella & the Hill Country
Ride the famous blue train from Kandy to Ella — one of the world’s most scenic railway journeys. Wander tea estates, visit waterfalls, and watch the mist roll through the mountains.
  3. Galle Fort
A UNESCO World Heritage site where Dutch colonial charm meets coastal chill. Explore cobblestone streets lined with boutiques, cafés, and art galleries. Sunset from the ramparts? Pure magic.
  4. Yala National Park
Home to one of the world’s highest leopard densities. Take a guided safari for a chance to spot elephants, sloth bears, and crocodiles roaming through dry forest and lagoons.
  5. Nuwara Eliya
Known as “Little England,” this misty town sits in Sri Lanka’s tea highlands. Visit a working tea factory, sip fresh Ceylon, and stroll through Hakgala Botanical Gardens.
  6. Kandy & the Temple of the Tooth
Sri Lanka’s cultural capital. Visit the sacred temple said to house a tooth relic of the Buddha, then wander Kandy Lake and nearby spice gardens.
  7. Mirissa Beach
A bohemian paradise perfect for whale watching, sunset cocktails, and lazy beach days. You can even spot blue whales offshore from November to April.
  8. Polonnaruwa
Ancient ruins, stone Buddhas, and centuries of royal history. Hire a bike and cycle through this once-mighty capital surrounded by monkeys and forest
  9. Colombo
A fast-evolving capital blending colonial architecture with modern design. Dine at rooftop restaurants, visit the National Museum, and watch locals fly kites at Galle Face Green.

What to Eat: Sri Lankan Cuisine You’ll Crave Forever!

Sri Lankan food is an explosion of spice, coconut, and colour. Here are some of my absolute favourite must-try dishes — and where to find them:

Dish Description Where to Try
Rice & Curry The national staple — fragrant rice served with 3–5 curries, sambols, and pickles. Upali’s by Nawaloka (Colombo)
Hoppers (Appa) Bowl-shaped pancakes made from rice flour and coconut milk — crisp edges, soft centre. Ministry of Crab Café, Galle
Kottu Roti Stir-fried chopped roti with vegetables, eggs, and spicy curry — late-night street food perfection. Hotel de Pilawoos, Colombo
Lamprais Dutch-inspired rice parcel baked in a banana leaf with curry, egg, and sambol. The Dutch Burgher Union, Colombo
Coconut Sambol Fresh grated coconut with chili, lime, and salt — the perfect sidekick to every meal. Everywhere, especially home-style eateries
Don't miss:
Try Ceylon tea tasting in Nuwara Eliya or a seafood BBQ in Mirissa straight from the day’s catch.

Getting Around Sri Lanka
Airports:
  • Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) – Main gateway near Colombo

Transport options:
  • Private driver - Most comfortable for multi-stop trips; average $60–80 AUD per day with vehicle and driver.
